1 Less Car, 1 More Bike
1-on-1 mentoring by cyclists for, stressed, time poor car commuters who think bike commuting is impractical, dangerous or both.
How this will impact Adelaide's carbon emissions
People who commute to work by bike are happier, healthier, less stressed, more productive and produce almost zero emissions (apart from a haze of self righteousness). But when we wax lyrical about the joys of bike commuting, our car commuting colleagues always have multiple reasons why it would never work for them: 'too far', 'too dangerous', 'no showers', 'too slow', 'I'm too unfit', etc, etc.
Bike commuters know that all these problems can be overcome with a mixture of determination, planning, lateral thinking, local knowledge and community support. And they know, above all else, that cycling to work is one of the biggest changes you can make to help your health, happiness, environment and bank balance (imagine getting rid of that 2nd car).
My service will use bike commuters to mentor car drivers 1-on-1. The experienced cyclist will design a bike commuting route for their mentee that is safe and fun. They'll source the right bike (possibly electrically assisted), and they'll ride to work with their mentee every day for at least 2 weeks. They'll find local showers near work, they'll show them how to fold and pack their clothes so they look sharp as ever in the office. They'll help them with their bike-wear. Lycra is not compulsory!
After 2 weeks the car driver will not look back, and the cycling mentor will move on to their next pupil.
1 by 1 we'll get car drivers cycling. Lives will be saved. Marriages will be saved. Sanity will be restored. That is the power of riding a bike 5 days a week. If you think that is an exaggeration - you should sign up - and I'll prove you wrong ;-)
Voting has now closed for the Wildcard prize. Stay tuned to find out which project will be the 11th finalist.
