Enable occupants to contribute to the efficient running of commercial buildings, and in doing so create a more livable sustainable built environment.
How this will impact Adelaide's carbon emissions
In today’s commercial buildings, people have little control over their environment. The temperature setting in an office is often misaligned with people’s actual preferences. This causes discomfort and loss of productivity, and waste energy by unnecessarily over-conditioning a space.
ToGathered is an app created to allow building occupants to easily provide comfort feedback to building managers. Occupant votes are aggregated and used to optimise HVAC system settings to deliver conditions that satisfy the highest number of building occupants.
Existing systems attempt to provide comfort by maintaining ambient conditions within certain predetermined setpoints. While ambient conditions are important factors, they alone are not sufficient. Existing systems simply cannot take into account the transient and dynamic nature of occupants’ behaviour. They ignore important factors like metabolic rates, clothing values and personal preferences etc.
With ToGathred, real-time feedback can easily be obtained via smartphones. Building occupants can provide feedback with the ease of a tap on their smartphone. With this data we can maximise the comfort of the majority and improve the efficiency of the air conditioning system at the same time
Using occupant feedback to optimise HVAC settings will help improve thermal comfort, increase productivity and reduce energy consumption. The information gathered can also be used by building managers to track and report the performance of their building, feeding into industry recognised benchmarks like NABERS and Green Star.
The engagement of end users is critical to the future development of sustainable buildings. ToGathered will bring that future to within the palms of our hands.
